Tangerines are a variety of Mandarin oranges, which originated as wild oranges from India over 3000 years ago. They went with the explorers to China, and were incorporated into Chinese medicine practices. Many years later, they found their way to North Africa, to Morocco.
After the mid 1800’s, Tangiers was the port city that shipped a great number of the oranges to the USA, and the Americans called this deep orange Mandarin variety “Tangerines.”
Tangerines share most properties with Mandarin oranges but have no pips. The oil is more concentrated with an intense in fresh, sweet aroma. Instead of steam-distillation like most essential oils, Tangerine oil is extracted by cold-pressing the oil-rich peel.
Tangerine essential oil is used for many therapeutic conditions, as well as for perfume top notes and household and beauty products. Here are a few of the benefits of Tangerine oil:
Disinfectant:Add about 5-10 drops of Tangerine oil to your favorite organic household cleaner, or mix with white vinegar and water, and you will have a disinfecting cleaner that’s as effective as brand-name cleaners without the harmful side effects and chemicals. Tangerine oil contains limonene, with powerful antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, antiseptic, anti-microbial and disinfectant agents that really work, and they smell amazing too!
Oily Skin:If your skin is oily, dull, and prone to acne or dermatitis, Tangerine essential oil is your friend! It improves circulation and detoxification of the body, fine-tunes the metabolism, balances the production of sebum in the skin, and soothes inflammation, as well as calming stressful emotions that wreak havoc with skin caused by hormonal changes during those teenage through childbearing and menopause years!
Laxative:Occasional constipation can be very uncomfortable, and Tangerine essential oil can help dissipate painful gas pockets, supports the relaxation of stressed and hyperactive organs, and helps relax the muscles of the intestines, allowing your body’s natural excretory system function to return to normal. Just rub a few drops of Tangerine, mixed with carrier oil like coconut or jojoba, in a circular motion on your abdomen. It feels relieving and the Tangerine goes right to work to get you feeling better!
Tip: Mix a few drops of Tangerine oil in with your shampoo or body wash for your early morning shower. You’ll feel instantly alert and energized, and ready to face a brand new day with positive energy!
Blending: Tangerine essential oil blends well with: Black Pepper, Cinnamon Leaf, Clove, Frankincense, Geranium, Myrrh, Patchouli and Sandalwood.
