Floral Ice Cubes for Summer Cocktails

by Leah Morgan, CCAP

Let’s face it – we could all use a little pick-me-up this year! Well, in our world, nothing picks us up quite like flowers do. So why not find ways to bring the joyful beauty of our colourful friends into every single corner of our life? This recipe is very straightforward and leaves much room for creativity. But here are a couple things to consider before you make your floral ice cubes.

1. Do not use flowers from the florist – they are often sprayed with chemicals and you do not want to ingest them.

2. If you’re picking flowers from nature or a backyard, make sure to rinse them thoroughly as they might have dirt or animal urine (yikes, hopefully not!) on them.

3. Speaking of urine, avoid picking flowers from and roadside or common trail, as dogs might favor certain plants to do their business on.

4. There are several edible flowers that you can include in your fancy cubes. Some of them include lavender, roses, calendula, chamomile, rosemary (leaves too!) and nasturtiums. Heck why not even add some leaves like lemon balm and mint!

Simply place your fresh cleaned flowers in your ice tray and fill with water before placing in the freezer. A few hours later, add your colourful cubes to your favorite drink and enjoy a fresh one on the porch!

Oh, and here’s a hint: you are not limited to making floral cubes! You can put these flowers in your ice lollies, or make an ice bowl by placing a smaller bowl in a large one and filling the space between them with water and flowers before freezing. The options are endless!
